Author & Speaker
I went to Oxford, U.K., as a Rhodes Scholar (1992-94) to read English Literature. For nearly two decades I worked in Corporate and Non-Profit sectors, team leading communications management and community development programs. I then decided to go back to graduate school, and earned another Masters in International Development, focusing on International Law, and Science & Technology Policy (Cornell University, NY, U.S, 2013).
Subsequently, I started pursuing my research interest through a doctoral program in Science & Technology Studies in the history and sociology of innovation (York University, Toronto, Canada). While at York, I taught three undergrad courses: Environmental History, Natural Resource Management, and Science & Technology in Global Development (2015-2017). While working on my doctoral dissertation on Pacific issues, I pursued a postgraduate certification in Strategic Space Law (McGill, Montreal, Canada, 2019).
In addition to being a poet, educator, and speaker, I now nurture my interests in the growing body of Space Law, Intellectual Property (IP) laws, and in international laws of the sea. Am a published author of research articles and policy papers in the field of International Relations (IR). Links to two of these publications are listed in this site, under the header 'scholarly writings'.
As a former corporate professional, I have a continued interest in the business aspects of IP. I founded a company, KeyVisory LLC with technology partners for offering IP software solutions to individuals and organizations in need of protecting their brands, IP processes and assets. Pls. see my LinkedIn profile, for more details: https://www.linkedin.com/in/venilla/
In the course of my life journey, I have battled emotional stress, a broken home, financial uncertainties, several surgeries, including vision problems that led to two eye surgeries. Some awards, fellowships and promotions at work happened in a smooth way. Some others did not materialize, for the best. Darkness did not phase me out. Instead, my struggles inspired me to become resilient. I now do the good work of motivational speaking, while continuing to be a poet, scholar, and educator.
